What is OMT Therapy?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands-on therapy used by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) to treat a variety of health conditions, especially those related to mechanical pain such as muscle, tendon, or bone pain caused by structural imbalances. OMT involves applying gentle pressure and specific techniques to the muscles, soft tissues, and joints to help the body realign and restore balance. This holistic treatment not only aims to relieve pain but also enhances the body’s overall function and supports its natural healing processes. As primary care physicians, we integrate OMT into our care model to improve wellness and help prevent illness, offering personalized treatments that focus on long-term health and vitality at our Direct Primary Care clinic in Maine. OMT at Examined Life is provided by licensed osteopathic physicians trained in hands-on techniques. Learn more about our doctors and their approach to whole-body care.

How Osteopathic Manipulation Works

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) works by using precise, hands-on techniques to improve mobility, relieve tension, and restore proper alignment in the body. A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) assesses structural imbalances and applies controlled pressure, stretching, and gentle manipulation to affected areas. These techniques help reduce muscle tightness, improve circulation, and promote the body's natural healing processes. Unlike conventional treatments that rely on medication alone, OMT directly addresses the root causes of pain and dysfunction, making it an effective option for musculoskeletal issues, chronic pain, and mobility restrictions. We also offer body services like Accufit to support strength, tone, and mobility alongside OMT. Whether used alone or alongside other treatments, osteopathic manipulation provides a non-invasive approach to optimizing physical function and overall health.

OMT FAQ

  • Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a hands-on treatment method. OMT is sometimes called osteopathic manipulative therapy or osteopathic manipulation.

Doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) use OMT to treat mechanical pain (muscle, tendon or bone pain due to structural imbalance) and a wide range of health conditions. DOs also utilize Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to diagnose and prevent disease, as well as to enhance the body's overall functioning.

Using several OMT techniques, DOs apply gentle pressure to manipulate the muscles, soft tissues, and joints. The treatment encourages your body to heal itself by ensuring that your bones and muscles are aligned and balanced properly.

  • The timeframe for experiencing results varies depending on the dysfunction. For instance, if your sacrum is misaligned postpartum, you may notice immediate same-day improvements. However, if you've been experiencing back pain for several years, significant results may take several treatments. Typically, we recommend seeing patients weekly or every other week for 1 month, then spacing out treatments as you progress. Our doctors teach you how to maintain your treatment each step of the way for lasting results.

  • Trigger points are highly sensitive areas within muscles that worsen when pressure is applied. To address this, we inject lidocaine directly into the painful muscle tissue. Additionally, we utilize needling to break up the fascia and promote healing by stimulating the immune system. This procedure typically lasts 5-10 minutes, with many patients experiencing pain relief within 2 minutes.
