July is UV Safety Awareness Month, which means it’s a great time to focus on protecting your skin and eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation. Exposure to UV radiation from the sun can cause skin damage, premature aging, and increase your risk of skin cancer. There are a few ways you can help keep yourself safe this summer and prevent the consequences of UV exposure.
First, make sure to wear protective clothing. Cover up with long sleeves, pants, and hats that shade your face, neck, and ears. If it’s too hot to cover up, make sure to seek shade!
Limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest. You’ll also want to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, which can block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.
Next, make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to any exposed skin. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Many conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that can irritate the skin. Natural sunscreens with mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide provide effective protection without harmful additives. These minerals sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. One of our favorite sunscreen options is available in our office - Hydratint Pro Mineral Sunscreen by Alastin.
By incorporating these natural methods into your daily routine, you can enjoy the sun safely and keep your skin healthy. Always remember to monitor your skin for any changes and consult with a healthcare provider if you notice any unusual moles or spots.
Drink Plenty of Water
During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can dehydrate your body. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food when you’re not hungry. It is incredibly important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight to nine glasses of water a day. For additional flavor, consider adding fruit, or opting for a cold green tea or coconut water.
Keep Up the Exercise Regime
Before you hide those running shoes in the wardrobe, remember summer exercise doesn’t have to stop because of the rising temperatures. Try moving your workouts to an earlier, cooler time of day. This not only helps you avoid the heat but can also help reset your circadian rhythm, leading to improved sleep. Stay active and healthy all summer long!
Get Wet
Summer is the perfect time of year to get wet! Boring, hot runs can be swapped for a summer swim at your local pool or gym. Start by swimming for 10 minutes and increase the time over the following weeks by doing front crawl, breaststroke, or backstroke to mix up your cardio workout. A 30-minute session of this full-body workout will burn almost 400 calories! If swimming laps isn’t your thing, join a water aerobics class or create your aerobic workout with jumping jacks, marching, and jogging in water.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is a healthy fat that contains essential fatty acids that help the skin resist UV damage. These fatty acids are also part of the cell membranes that keep in all the moisture your body loses through heat and sweat during the summer. To protect your skin and keep it supple, consume about one tablespoon of olive oil daily or add it to a healthy salad or fish dish to get all those essential fatty acids.
Protect Your Hair
Our hair suffers a lot during the summer. Constant heat, sun damage, and chlorine take a toll on our hair and can leave it feeling limp and dull. If you’re planning on swimming a lot during the summer, it is advisable to use anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner to help neutralize the chlorine from your hair. If possible, minimize the use of hairdryers, straighteners, and other heating products. Check out our Nutrafol shampoos and conditioners, now in stock, to keep your hair healthy and strong throughout the season!
Take Up a New Hobby
Summer is the perfect time to take up a new activity. Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and will help you burn some calories! Planting an herb garden is a fantastic way to get your hands dirty, have quick access to some healthy flavors for your summer meals, and, if you have kids, get them involved in playing outside.
If gardening isn’t your thing, get some inspiration from Wimbledon and try your hand at some tennis, pickleball, or golf. Yoga is also a perfect alternative for some alone time outside. Roll out a towel and have some fun trying out planks and some breathing techniques in the sun.
Here's to a healthy, happy summer!

Migraine sufferers battle in silence. This unseen pain can cause a lot of disruptions in day-to-day life. That's why this month, we want to take some time to address migraines and headaches. What causes them, and how can you find relief?
Migraines are characterized by intense pulsating headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, transcending mere discomfort and profoundly impacting daily life. They disrupt work, strain relationships, and erode the very fabric of one's well-being. Yet, despite their prevalence and severity, migraines are frequently dismissed as mere headaches, their profound impact overlooked. Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of migraines, there are some factors that can contribute.
Genetics: Family history plays a big role in if you will be a migraine sufferer. If your parents get them, chances are you will too. They are very hereditary.
Neurological Factors: Changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway, are believed to contribute to migraine attacks. Imbalances in neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, may also play a role.
Environment: Changes in weather, air pressure fluctuations, or altitudes can trigger a migraine.
Hormones: Fluctuations in estrogen, especially in women, can cause migraines. Many women experience migraines during their period, pregnancy, or menopause.
Other Triggers: Stress, dehydration, strong odors, certain foods, alcohol, lack of sleep, or bright lights are all things that can bring on a migraine.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You do not have to suffer from migraines. There are treatment options available.
Did you know that Botox® does more than just smooth out wrinkles? At Examined Life, we're excited to shed light on the lesser-known uses of Botox®. Beyond its role in enhancing aesthetic appeal, Botox® is being used to provide temporary treatment for chronic migraine, cervical dystonia, spasticity, severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, and blepharospasm.
Seeing patients struggle with long wait times for essential care motivated me to open Examined Life. At this office, we have the freedom to provide the comprehensive treatment you deserve. Botox® has been life-altering for many people after just three sessions.
Because of the profound results of this treatment and the significant expense associated with this amount of Botox®, medical Botox® is the sole service for which Examined Life accepts commercial insurance.
